Ruka could come up with a million reasons not to drink Makoto’s blood. Being a vampire, for want of a less pun-ish word, sucked. Yes, immortality sounded romantic to those who didn’t know better, but it was a cold, empty reality. All a vampire lived for was to feed on those whose lives really WERE worth living.

It didn’t matter that Kaito was furious and frustrated with him. It didn’t matter that Makoto herself begged him to do it. It didn’t even matter that the reason why they were both so desperate was because not drinking her blood meant he would soon give up his own life.

There really were a million reasons, but Ruka only needed one; he loved her too much to condemn her to this interminable, selfish existence.
