Memories in the Sand (Koishite Akuma)

Makoto had taken off her shoes to walk along the beach. The ocean breeze rustling her hair and the scent of the salt air brought back memories. She closed her eyes and saw herself and Ayumu playing in the waves, splashing each other and laughing.
Pausing at the water's edge, she crouched down and used her index finger to write the characters for her name in the wet, dark sand. The last time she had done this was in high school, with Ayumu by her side, writing his own name. Ten years had passed since Ayumu died. Makoto would not see his name written next to hers again.
Another hand came into view, and new characters spelled a different name – Ruka.
She turned to smile into the eternally-youthful face of her first love. No longer Ayumu, he had a new identity as one of the students she now taught at school.
Ten years had changed more than just his name, but Makoto knew she had changed, too. Life, like the shoreline, was always changing, but human beings – and certain vampires – could be adaptable.
Makoto held out her hand and Ruka accepted it with a smile of his own. They continued strolling along the beach as a new wave filled the characters they had left in the sand.
