Jiro was enjoying a well-brewed coffee when Riki came to him in distress. Of course, where Riki was concerned, the signs of distress were very subtle. The Franken stood in the doorway looking the same as always, save for an almost imperceptible twitch of an eyebrow.
“What’s the matter, Riki?” the Wolfen asked his friend.
“I think you should come,” Riki said, his tone characteristically slow and even. “Ramon is having a fit.”
Jiro frowned. Ramon may have been in the guise of a 13-year-old boy, but he was actually 127 years old, and generally cheerful. He wasn’t prone to throwing tantrums, so what kind of ‘fit’ could Riki be talking about? He stood up to follow the other man.
He heard music playing before they actually reached Ramon – it sounded like the 1960’s station on the radio. When he finally saw the Merman, he realized that what Riki had mistaken for a fit was actually Ramon dancing to the music.
“Oh, hi guys!” Ramon grinned when he saw them. “Listen to this song; isn’t it great?” He leaped over to turn up the volume and the music and lyrics filled the room:
“They did the mash
They did the monster mash
The monster mash
It was a graveyard smash.”
The two adults looked at Ramon, who was beaming excitedly. “It’s perfect for us, don’t you think? We’re all monsters, right?”
Jiro and Riki looked at each other. It was true; the three of them were the last of their kind, three different species of monster. But as for that song –
“Come on, dance with me!” Ramon grabbed them both and pulled them into the room, then resumed bouncing happily to the beat. Riki made an effort in his own way, accidentally doing a pretty good Robot, while Jiro gave in and joined them, a tolerant smirk on his face. The catchy tune surrounded them and before long the Wolfen, Franken, and Mermaid were all laughing and doing the most appropriately named dance for them as could be.
