Trio Trials - Part 34 (Sailormoon)

NOTE: This is an alternate universe crossover story, so you can expect anything and everything from character ages being changed to men being mothers. Contains yaoi/yuri relationships. It stars the Amazon Trio from Sailormoon SS, but eventually has characters such as the Three Lights from Sailorstars, and others from Rurouni Kenshin, Yuu Yuu Hakushou, Fushigi Yuugi, Gundam Wing, Fruits Basket, etc. Not meant to be canon.

I began this fic in 1998 and stopped writing it for a long time at Part 32, then added a couple of extra chapters. I reserve the right to resume writing it again at any time. ;)

The phone rang in the Kou household. Seiya, Taiki, and Yaten all looked up in horror.

“The phone!” they yelled in unison and charged out of the room.

“Hurry!” Yaten cried.

“We’ve got to get to it –“ Seiya said, pumping his legs.

“—Before Papa does!” Taiki concluded.

As they tore around the corner, they saw Da Cider pick up the receiver. “Helloooo?”

The teenagers skidded to a stop beside him and they all tried to grab the receiver, but their father batted them away.

“Oh, hello, Hawk Eye!” he said brightly. “You want to talk to Taiki?”

“Oh no,” Taiki groaned while the other two breathed deep sighs of relief and walked away.

“Welllll, I don’t know!” Da Cider said in a mock-thoughtful tone. “I’m not sure he’s home ….”

“Papa, give me the phone!” Taiki exclaimed, reaching for it again.

“He might be in the bathroom – he reads in there sometimes –“

Taiki lunged and grabbed the phone, giving his grinning father a dark look. Da Cider patted his son’s head and finally left him alone. “Hello, Hawk Eye?”

“Taiki, hi!” Hawk Eye replied, sounding like he was trying hard not to laugh. “It’s always fun calling your house, you know that?”

“All too well,” Taiki replied dryly. “So what’s up?”

“Fish Eye finally came around and he’s willing to talk to Seiya. I just wanted to let you know so that you could pass on the message.”

“That’s great news! I hope they can work it out.” Taiki smiled a little. “So … was that the only reason you called?”

“Heh, well, I don’t really have a reason, but I’d like to chat ….”

--

Fish Eye wiped his hands on a dishtowel. Dinner was in the oven and there wasn’t anything more to do for a while. He was disappointed that Seiya hadn’t called yet – he knew Hawk Eye had called Taiki to pass on the message an hour ago.

Tiger Eye walked in and peeked into the oven. “When will dinner be ready?”

“About six,” Nuriko replied, lifting the lid of a pot on the stove and stirring the contents. “Set the table, Tiger Eye, it’s your turn.”

The blonde teenager began gathering plates and utensils. He glanced at Fish Eye as he passed. “What’s wrong?”

“Oh, I told Hawk Eye I’d be willing to talk to Seiya again and I heard him call Taiki right after. I figured he’d given him the message.” He sighed. “But Seiya hasn’t called.”

Tiger Eye laughed. “That’s probably because Taiki hasn’t gotten off the phone long enough to tell Seiya anything! Hawk Eye is still yakking to him up there.”

“What?” Fish Eye cried.

“Honey, why don’t you just go over there and talk to him after dinner?” Nuriko suggested. “After all, you were the one who decided not to speak to Seiya in the first place. You shouldn’t expect him to call you just because you’ve decided he’s allowed to.”

Fish Eye pouted. “Won’t I seem desperate if I do that?”

“I think you’d seem mature and ready to make up for ignoring him.”

“Well,” Fish Eye said slowly, picking up a piece of raw carrot and nibbling on it, “I still think he should have told me about the girl thing, but I guess going over there would be better than waiting around for a call.”

“No kidding!” Tiger Eye called out from the dining room. “Especially since Seiya will be married with grandchildren before Hawk Eye ever gets off the phone!”

--

Duo knocked on Kyo’s bedroom door and peeked in. “Kyo?” He pushed the door open further and walked in, scratching his head. “Now where did he go?”

A breeze wafted across his face and he saw the window was open. He headed over and looked out. “Kyo?”

“Yeah?”

Duo twisted around to look up toward the roof, his long braid sliding out the window. “You up there, man, or am I hearing things?”

“I’m up here.”

“Okay.” Duo said, more to himself than anyone else, and carefully climbed out the window. It was a long way down with nothing to break his fall. So he decided not to fall.

A couple of minutes later as he dangled from the edge of the roof, he only hoped his fingers would remember that resolution.

“Helllllp! Kyo!”

Duo heard a muttered curse and then saw Kyo’s face above his own as the other boy pulled him up onto the roof with him.

“Whew! Thanks!” Duo looked around and gave a low whistle. “Not a bad view, huh? But I’m not sure it’s worth nearly breaking your neck.”

“I won’t break my neck,” Kyo said calmly and lay down on his back with his arms behind his head. “I like to be up high.”

“You and Inuyasha,” Duo replied with a grin. “I can understand it in a cat, but not a dog.” He sat down beside the orange-haired boy. “So what kind of cat are you?”

“Cursed,” Kyo snapped back. “It’s why I’m here. My family is trying to hide me.”

“Well, it makes no sense so far,” Duo answered. “Care to elaborate?”

“Not really,” Kyo told him. “You’ll find out soon enough.”

“Well, okay,” Duo said easily. “I hope you and Inuyasha will be able to get along despite the cat/dog thing.”

“Depends on him. I’ve lived with a dog before.” Kyo frowned slightly. “He may have been a pervert, but he didn’t try to assert his ‘canineness’ on me.”

“I’ll tell Inuyasha to back off and maybe we can all be buds,” Duo suggested and winked. “Finally the boys outnumber the girls in this place, so we oughta stick together!”

Kyo gave him a strange look. “You remind me of my cousin Momiji. He’s always too damn cheerful, too.”

Duo laughed. “See? You and Inuyasha have something in common already – he’s always saying stuff like that about me.” He stood up and scanned the view again. “Hey, I’ll bet that’s Fish Eye over on the next block! Hard to miss that blue hair!”

Kyo looked up, startled. “Fish Eye? What kind of name is that?”

“It’s the name of a jewel. Come here!”

His natural curiosity got the better of him and Kyo stood up. Duo pointed. “You probably can’t see detail from here, but you can see the hair, right?”

“Yeah,” Kyo answered, watching the long blue hair bounce against the teenager’s back. He couldn’t tell from that distance, especially from the back, if he was looking at a male or female.

“DUO!” Kanna’s bellow came from one of the windows below. “It’s dinnertime, get your butt in here! Kyo, if you can hear me, you come, too, okay?”

The long-haired boy grinned over at Kyo. “You get a request, I get an order. Don’t expect that kind of treatment to last – it’s just ‘cause you’re new here.”

Kyo snorted and headed for the edge of the roof. “Don’t worry. The only special treatment I’ve ever had before has been negative, so I won’t be expecting much.”

Duo’s smile faded as he watched Kyo leap right off the roof. He hurried to the edge himself and watched the other boy walk calmly in the front door.

“The dude’s got issues, no doubt about it,” he murmured thoughtfully. “But at least he seems to land on his feet in more ways than one!”

--

Fish Eye raised a fist to knock on the Kous’ front door then paused, frowning over his shoulder. Why did it feel like someone was looking at him?

The door opened and Fish Eye turned back, startled. He did a double-take. Yaten was there – a very FEMALE Yaten, wearing a halter top and a short, tight skirt.

“What do YOU want?” she asked in a snotty tone that made Fish Eye decide he wouldn’t like Yaten-girl any better than he did Yaten-boy.

“I’m here to see Seiya, please,” he said, determined to remain polite.

“Oh, really?” Yaten replied and leaned against the doorframe like she didn’t plan on moving anytime soon. “So now you deign to speak to him. Maybe he’s no longer interested in speaking to YOU.”

“Could you at least ask him so we’ll know one way or the other?” Fish Eye answered, trying not to grit his teeth.

“Hey, I’m busy. I don’t have time to play messenger for you,” Yaten retorted. “Besides,” she added slyly and slipped into a sexy pose that showed off her female form, “Seiya is still half-girl, you know. That isn’t going to change – YEOWTCH!” she cried, spinning around to face her mother, rubbing her butt with both hands. “Mama! What’d you hit me for?!”

“Show some modesty, Yaten!” Apricot told her, hands on hips. “What are you doing in an outfit like that, anyway?”

“Papa said it was okay!”

“Your father doesn’t know anything about such things, now go change into something decent!”

Yaten pouted and stalked away, muttering. Fish Eye had to admit that he knew how he felt except that his own parents would be in full agreement about what clothes were off-limits.

Apricot turned to Fish Eye. “I’m sorry for her rudeness. You’re here for Seiya?”

“Yes, Ma’am,” he answered, not feeling comfortable enough with Apricot yet to call her by her first name, as he did with his other friends’ parents.

“He’s upstairs.” Apricot smiled and stood aside. “Come on in.”

“Thank you.” Fish Eye stepped inside and looked around the foyer. The walls were covered in a mixture of band posters and framed family photos.

“He’s probably listening to music up there, so he won’t hear me call,” Apricot explained. “I’ll go up and tell him you’re here.”

“Okay, thank you.” Fish Eye bowed and watched her go upstairs.

“Hi there, Fishie!” greeted Da Cider as he came into the foyer from the kitchen. “How are you?”

“Fine, sir,” the teenager answered.

“Pah, just call me Da Cider,” he said with a wink. “If thousands of strangers can do it, my neighbor certainly can!”

Fish Eye grinned. He liked this wild-haired man, even if some of the adults thought he was odd. He’d been a well-known heavy metal musician, and even if Fish Eye wasn’t into that scene, he appreciated that Da Cider had passed his love of music on to his children.

Taiki strolled out of the living room talking on the cordless phone. “Sure, Hawk Eye, I know,” he chuckled softly. “Yes, well, I’ll think about it ….”

Da Cider leaned conspiratorially closer to Fish Eye. “This is his second time on the phone with Hawk Eye this evening.”

That figured, Fish Eye thought. Hawk Eye had had to get off the phone earlier to eat dinner, so what did he do right afterwards? Call Taiki back.

Da Cider waved a hand in front of Taiki’s face and the tall teenager jumped, finally noticing they were there. “Papa! Fish Eye!” He put a hand over his mouth. “Fish Eye! Oh my gosh, I was supposed to tell Seiya you were willing to talk to him! I completely forgot, I’m sorry!”

“Your mother is getting him now,” Fish Eye replied dryly. “Thanks, anyway.” He leaned over to yell into the phone, “Thanks to you, too, brother dearest!”

“Huh?” came Hawk Eye’s confused voice through the receiver.

Apricot came down the stairs. “Taiki Kou, are you on that phone again?” she said. “You’re supposed to be doing the dinner dishes!”

Taiki blushed. “Hawk Eye called back, and –“

“Dishes, now!” Apricot said firmly and took the phone from him, aiming a swat at his backside that just missed as he dashed for the kitchen. “Hawk Eye?” she said into the phone. “Taiki has chores to do now, he’ll talk to you tomorrow. Goodnight.” She hung up the phone and gave her husband an annoyed look. “You could have gotten him off the phone yourself. You knew he was supposed to be doing the dishes.”

“They weren’t going anywhere,” he replied easily. “What harm could –“

“It causes a LOT of harm if we’re not consistent, Da Cider!” Apricot snapped, then noticed Fish Eye fidgeting uncomfortably nearby and composed herself. “I’m sorry, dear. Please go upstairs to Seiya’s room – just follow the music.”

“Okay,” Fish Eye said and quickly headed upstairs, wanting as much distance between himself and the awkward scene as he could get.
